A period product does not improve performance

A menstrual cup may be a practical period-care option for running, yoga, gym sessions, or team sport, but it does not increase endurance, speed recovery, or balance hormones. The useful questions are whether it fits comfortably, stays in position for you, and can be emptied and cleaned within your schedule.

Test fit before an important session

Do not make a competition or long workout your first trial. Practise insertion and removal on ordinary days, check that the cup has opened, and move through the positions your activity requires. If you feel persistent pain, pressure, or rubbing, stop and reassess the fit.

Plan around flow and facilities

Elys Cup may be worn for up to 8 hours, but you may need to empty it sooner depending on your flow. Consider the length of the session, access to toilets and clean water, and whether carrying a backup product would make the day easier.

Keep hygiene simple

Wash your hands before insertion or removal and clean the cup according to its instructions. If facilities are limited, plan ahead rather than extending wear beyond the stated maximum.

Use the option that works for you

Some athletes prefer a cup; others prefer pads, tampons, period underwear, or a combination. Comfort and reliability vary by person and by activity. A period product should support your routine without being credited for physiological or performance effects it cannot establish.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Research on menstrual-cycle phases and exercise performance is inconsistent and generally low quality. A systematic review found only a trivial average difference in one phase and recommended an individualized approach. It did not test menstrual cups as a performance intervention. There is no evidence that a cup increases oxygen delivery, strength, speed or endurance, reduces inflammation, prevents injury, or accelerates recovery. Any practical preference should not be described as a physiological advantage.

Leaks and unexpected changes

No cup is guaranteed leak-free during exercise. Capacity, position, fit and flow can change across a cycle and between activities. If leaking occurs, check that the cup has opened, consider whether it needs emptying, and reassess the size or position without forcing it. A familiar backup product is sensible during learning, travel or an important event. Persistent pain, pressure, rubbing or urinary symptoms are reasons to remove the cup and seek advice if the problem continues.

After training or competition

Count the entire time since insertion, including travel, warm-up and recovery periods, toward the up-to-8-hour maximum. Wash your hands before handling the cup and clean it according to its instructions. Limited facilities are a reason to plan a safe opportunity to empty it, not to extend wear. Period symptoms that affect training deserve their own assessment; changing products does not treat an underlying medical issue.
